The Charterhouse, London

Supporting a 16th-century listed historic estate that struggled to operate its museum, heritage and gardens.

Though initially looking at audience development, with management we identified more pressing needs including income generation and fully utilising staff and volunteer resource.

Working with a wide team of staff, we directed a review of the volunteers, opening up opportunities for them to contribute in different ways.

In parallel, we led an assessment of the potential heritage offer using all available assets as well as opportunities and implications for increasing earned income - particularly through hire and filming. We developed a mixed economy approach as well as setting up a central activity planning system to coordinate effort. We also supported a temporary exhibition in the public square next to the entrance gate.

Using this work, The Charterhouse has re-opened its museum and provides a wider heritage offer. It has increased earned income and reconfigured staff and volunteer resources to better support delivery. It is exploring new partnerships and is building resilience for the future.
